Weather organizations support federal workers and researchers

In recent weeks, many federal workers lost their work. Research funding was shortened, and climate research has withdrawn review. Many affected professionals are in the weather, water and climate disciplines. This week the American meteorological society and the National Weather Association announced initiatives or statements in support of affected members or associates.

What is American meteorological society?

AMS is one of the world’s leading scientific and professional societies focused on the weather, water and climate enterprise. The AMS website identifies three areas of concentration: science, community and advancement. The organization publishes some of the most influential publications, revised by colleagues within the discipline and organizes scientific meetings. Through conferences, symposiums, educational programs and policy initiatives, it also unites the academy, industry and the government sector.

AMS also unites a wide range of students, scientists, teachers, researchers and enthusiasts. The company also advances professional development through its certification programs and other online learning options. If you’ve ever watched a meteorologist on TV, there is a good chance that they may have the determination of the AMS certified meteorologist. They also have certificates related to digital formats and counseling. In 2013, I was actually elected president of AMS, and was one of the most professionally fulfilled experiences of my career.

What is AMS offer?

In a blog post earlier during the week, the AMS Executive Committee, including President David Stensrud, wrote about federal funds and staff changes, “these shifts and accompanying uncertainties, are promoting concern throughout the weather and climate enterprise such as Public security, economic stability and scientific research that includes the government, the Academy and the private sector can be affected, directly or indirectly. ” By anticipating impacts for its community and beyond, the AMS announced some actions.

They continued to write, “Starting next week, AMS will temporarily open a series of services for the whole community, regardless of membership status in 2025. These will include: AMS Labor Board and Early Access to Notifications For work, AMS career portal, AMS career access and other webinars, and access to AMS magazines on online. The company offered a significant reduction in conference registrations within or virtual and a waiver of professional membership taxes for 2025.

Nwa speaks

Engaging in professional societies is important in almost all areas. Exchange of information, resources and representation is worth investing. The National Weather Association is a smaller professional society with an important voice in our field as well. Its membership includes many weather professionals from the federal operational sector. On Valentine’s Day, NWA issued its statement in support of federal workers and the wider weather enterprise. They write, “The American economy receives significant economic benefits from the weather and climate information provided to businesses and government leaders at all levels … The United States stays in the forefront of global weather, water and climate study, attracting students. From all over the world they seek to learn in our prestigious colleges and universities. “

The Board of Directors of the NWA was very clear about the possible impacts. They continued to say, “These changes can be plunged into services associated with partner industries, such as trading weather organizations and broadcast media, which would be just as devastating. Loss, degradation or damage to these services could endanger the safety of US citizens and undermine critical services that protect us from weather and climate events with a dangerous and high impact. “
